Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is characterized by three groups of symptoms:
INATTENTION
- difficulties in maintaining attention during a game or activity
- difficulties in following instructions and completing school assignments
- avoiding tasks that require mental effort
- difficulties with organization
- forgetting daily activities
HYPERACTIVITY
- fidgeting when sitting
- getting up often in situations where prolonged sitting is required
- excessive talking
- excessive running or climbing in situations where it is inappropriate
IMPULSIVENESS
- difficulties in waiting in line
- interrupting or disturbing others
About 3-5% of school-aged children are thought to have ADHD. The cause of ADHD is unknown, but it is thought that it may be related to genetic inheritance or other biological factors.
