Their behaviour may be repetitive or narrowly focussed. People with Autism also tend to experience differences with their senses that can affect the way they react to their surroundings.<\/p><div><div>Although the core characteristics of Autism may cause some challenges, they can also result in special skills and abilities. A person\u2019s exact experience in these two areas is specific to them.<\/div><div>\u00a0<\/div><div><div><div>For example, some people with Autism will find communicating with others hard, yet have no difficulties with noisy or busy situations. There are many unspoken rules that underpin social interactions, which changebased on the situation and people involved. Some people with Autism speak fluently while others have limited speech or do not talk at all.<\/p><div><h5><strong>How Social Communication affects students with Autism<\/strong><\/h5><p>Although no two students with Autism will be the\u00a0same, they all face challenges in interacting and\u00a0communicating with others. Students\u00a0with Autism may:<\/p><ul><li>Preferto\u00a0be\u00a0on\u00a0their\u00a0own\u00a0rather\u00a0than\u00a0interact\u00a0with\u00a0their\u00a0peers\u00a0or\u00a0with\u00a0adults<\/li><li>Not respond when people speak or gesture toward them, even when their name is called<\/li><li>Makelittle\u00a0eye\u00a0contact\u00a0with\u00a0others<\/li><\/ul><p>While some people with Autism will seek solitude, others may also have a strong desire for relationships \u2013though help with forming friendships is often needed.<\/p><p><strong style=\"color: #202426; font-family: 'Chelsea Market', cursive;\">Varying levels of understanding vs communication<\/strong><\/p><p>It is important to be aware that the communication abilities of a student with Autism is not necessarily equal to their ability to understand and process information.<\/p><p>For\u00a0example,\u00a0someone\u00a0with\u00a0a\u00a0very\u00a0limited\u00a0ability\u00a0to\u00a0express\u00a0themself\u00a0may\u00a0have\u00a0a\u00a0much\u00a0greater<\/p><p>understanding\u00a0than\u00a0is\u00a0immediately\u00a0apparent.\u00a0Similarly,\u00a0someone else who has a high level of verbal skills\u00a0and is able to get their point across may have great\u00a0difficulty understanding, processing and reacting to\u00a0information\u00a0presented\u00a0to\u00a0them.<\/p><p>Students\u00a0with\u00a0Autism\u00a0may:<\/p><ul><li>Bevery\u00a0\u2018concrete\u2019\u00a0or\u00a0literal\u00a0in\u00a0their\u00a0understanding\u00a0of\u00a0language<\/li><li>Havevery\u00a0few\u00a0words\u00a0that\u00a0they\u00a0can\u00a0use\u00a0to\u00a0express themselves and therefore need\u00a0communication\u00a0support<\/li><li>Talkwith\u00a0ease,\u00a0particularly\u00a0about\u00a0interests\u00a0that\u00a0are\u00a0important to them, with little understanding that\u00a0others\u00a0may\u00a0not\u00a0be\u00a0interested<\/li><\/ul><p>\u00a0<\/p><\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section within the Behaviour\u00a0area\u00a0of\u00a0characterising\u00a0Autism:<\/p><ul><li>Repetitive Actions \u2013 doing or saying somethingover\u00a0and\u00a0over\u00a0again\u00a0(including\u00a0routines)<\/li><li>IntenseInterests\u00a0\u2013\u00a0a\u00a0higher\u00a0degree\u00a0of\u00a0interest\u00a0in\u00a0a\u00a0particular\u00a0topic\u00a0or\u00a0activity\u00a0than\u00a0others\u00a0may\u00a0experience<\/li><li>Sensory Processing \u2013 differences in how theperson processes information that is provided\u00a0by their senses, which can result in unusual or\u00a0unexpected\u00a0behavioural\u00a0responses<\/li><\/ul><p>These\u00a0behaviours\u00a0are\u00a0often\u00a0connected.\u00a0When\u00a0the\u00a0world\u00a0is\u00a0overwhelming\u00a0and\u00a0unpredictable,\u00a0they\u00a0can\u00a0give\u00a0a\u00a0person\u00a0with\u00a0Autism\u00a0a\u00a0sense\u00a0of\u00a0predictability\u00a0and\u00a0comfort.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section
